Administration Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Approaches Third Week

The White House disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, making good on prior threats in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for terminating staff.

Although the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, representing the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. Following multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the standoff is not expected to be ended before then.

During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

Impact on Workers

These terminations occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of September but not the start of October, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our government running,” Stier stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
